The overrepresentation of people with serious mental illness in the criminal justice system is a complex problem. With a focus on reducing recidivism therapy can enhance clients' motivation for change and elicit prosocial values and life priorities.

Trauma and Grief

Recognizing traumatic stress symptoms and cultural factors associated with survivors is key to developing appropriate therapeutic interventions. Techniques vary but can include challenging irrational beliefs, correcting distorted thoughts and biases, role-playing, exposure with response prevention and relaxation training. 

Adoptive / Foster Parenting

TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. While the intervention is based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI® is connection.

Anxiety + Stress

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has become the leading treatment for anxiety, and with good reason. Research indicates that CBT can be an effective treatment for anxiety after as few as 8 sessions, with or without any form of medication.

Depression

Depression affects one’s cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and physical functions. One of the most insidious aspects of depression is that it tricks you into thinking that nothing will help, or that the relief will be temporary, and it will keep you in a cycle of maladaptive thinking, feeling, and doing (or non-doing). However, there are steps one can take to cope with depression.

LGBTQ

Gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth are at risk for a variety of clinical problems. Some of these problems include homophobia among family, peers, and authority figures (often expressed at school or at work), depression, suicidality, social anxiety, and body image disturbance.
